How teams are working without AI

A closer look at teams that still prefer human-only workflows — what they keep, what they trade, and why it sometimes still wins.

Not every team has bought in. We talked to a dozen that haven’t, and the pattern is more interesting than the easy story.

What stays

Most “AI-free” teams aren’t actually AI-free — they’re AI-skeptical. They keep tools that help them think and reject tools that pretend to think for them. Search, autocomplete, and grammar checks are in. Generated drafts and agentic loops are out.

What it costs

The trade is real. These teams move slower on volume work — outreach, basic docs, boilerplate code. They also report higher trust in the work that does ship, and fewer surprises when something gets challenged.
